Four days ago, the official Summer Game Fest website updated with a May 12 listing for “Sunrise #1,” which reads, “Join Geoff Keighley for a surprise game reveal.” There were no hints as to what this new game announcement could be, which has understandably led to a wildly diverse range of rumors. The rumors were apparently getting out of hand and Geoff Keighley decided to say something.

A Twitter user replied to a Keighley post saying “Please let this be Batman, Titanfall 3 or whatever Rocksteady is working on.” Keighley’s reply was, “Just to manage expectations the Tuesday game is something cool and fun.” Keighley doesn’t overtly say that the upcoming game is a smaller title, as he obviously wants as many gamers as possible to look forward to the announcement, but it’s heavily implied. “Manage expectations” isn’t something said without consideration.
To be fair to Keighley, he made this reply to a random Twitter user in a thread dozens of posts long. It’s not meant to be an announcement from Keighley. It’s still noteworthy, of course, in that it’s rather clear Keighley is rejecting the possibility of the announcement being a Rocksteady-caliber announcement. It’s more likely from a smaller publisher or indie. “Cool and fun” doesn’t really shrink down the possibilities, though.
The situation is definitely in part Keighley’s responsibility. He did just recently say on Twitter “This article will not age well” regarding a story saying gamers need to lower expectations regarding next-gen games. In other words, Keighley’s saying gamers should keep their expectations high. He later adds, “Let’s talk again soon” to another user, implying expectations will be met sooner rather than later. Keighley’s certainly toying with expectations, which has always been something he’s very successful at.
To find out exactly what game Geoff Keighley will be announcing for the Summer Game Fest’s first big standalone reveal, gamers will just have to watch. The reveal will occur on May 12 at 9:00 am PT. No stream has been provided yet for the reveal, so expect more information soon.
