The Hollywood Reporter has given fans some details to chew over regarding the upcoming movie that would see the continued expansion of Sony’s pocket Spider-Man franchise.

Sony Pictures, unlike what happened with Fox and their X-Men franchise, has maintained the rights to Spider-Man ever since they first acquired them and allowed Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire to produce their initial trilogy. With recent movies such as Venom and its sequel, as well as Morbius, and more spinoffs based on Peter Parker’s vast rogues gallery, they’ve been trying to expand on their property and create their own pocket Marvel universe. This has been made all the easier since the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Doctor Strange performing a spell that erased Spider-Man from every MCU character’s mind and essentially divorced the two franchises once more. The latest rogues gallery member to get a movie behind him is the musical villain Hypno-Hustler and the man behind the hustle is Donald Glover.

Glover’s association with music (his Childish Gambino persona well known to music fans worldwide) saw him take to the character’s musical side since that is Hypno-Hustler’s number one gimmick as a Spider-Man rogue. The other aspect Glover took to was the character’s limited presence in Spider-Man history to date making the character, unlike a Venom or a Morbius, an essential blank slate that can sort of be created (or recreated) from the ground up. It offers Glover, who has been nominated for several Emmys for his writing on his FX series Atlanta, an opportunity to flex his creative muscles toward the comic books he so clearly loves.

Glover’s association with Spider-Man started with a fan campaign started to land the actor the role of the titular webhead back in the 2010s, a bit that would be referenced when his character in Community wore a set of Spider-Man pajamas. Taking the popularity of the idea along with the election of Barack Obama, and the Marvel creators set out to design Miles Morales, a Spider-Man of color, and the rest was history. Sony has not only made the previously mentioned villain flicks in their expanding live-action Spider-Man universe, but also has a Kraven the Hunter movie coming October 6, 2023. This is besides continuing development of films based on Madame Web and Spider-Woman. Hypno-Hunter joins this lineup.

The as-yet-untitled Hypno-Hustler movie is part of the upcoming Spider-Man development slate.
